So Steel are a modern professional UK-based steel band or ‘steel drum band’ as our American cousins sometimes call it! At the core they are a small family of musicians that spans 3 generations. What distinguishes them from other steel bands is that they can offer vocals and other instrumentation to play their diverse repertoire.

Steel bands have been a popular choice for corporate events organisers for a long time now. Often the planners opt for the ‘unplugged’, acoustic variety of steel band the likes of which So Steel excel in providing. Most companies organise a Christmas party for their staff and many organise a fun day for the staff and their families. Others use a steel drum band to literally drum up support at their stores and campaigns.

They can also operate workshops for both adults and children at these events and their teambuilding and workshop experience all adds to the entertainment they can offer.

For many people steel bands are best enjoyed as part of a carnival parade. ‘Steel band’ and ‘carnival’ are inseparable concepts for them. A musical performance delivered by a band that’s mobile has potentially more impact and So Steel are in high demand as a steel band who can be the surprise element at conferences, town parades, sporting events and the like.

Although they can play statically on a moving float they are more often requested to play with the steel drums or ‘pans’ (the authentic Trinidadian term!) hanging around their necks – playing and strolling through an enthralled crowd.  When they entertain in this way, the cameras come out and there’s a smile on everyone’s face! So Steel will always be a band that welcomes being hired as a mobile steel band that can parade in short sets and as such complement or make an excellent alternative to a New Orleans styled trad jazz band.

The band is also a great option for those considering a strolling band similar to a Mexican Mariachi band. When they stroll with the pans around their necks they offer great versatility. They can weave their way through crowds and audiences providing the close-up experience that only mix and mingle entertainers can match whist creating a carnival atmosphere.

Yet they can also deliver a much quieter performance serenading people dining- moving from table to table playing and singing lilting Caribbean ballads such as ‘Yellow Bird’ and ‘Island In The Sun’.
