Pianist Terry

Biography

He studied music at Sussex University with a year scholarship to study jazz at Eastman School of Music in NY. His performing career started in 1985 touring Europe and the Middle East with US jazz singer Joe Lee Wilson.

Since then, he has recorded and performed with his own Latin group Cubana Bop all over the UK and appeared with a variety of Latin-jazz artists including Snowboy, Dave Valentin, & Pucho. Terry also plays in straight-ahead jazz groups and has played with UK and US artists such as Sonny Stitt, Chet Baker, and Archie Shepp.

He is very active in music education and is well known locally and nationally as Brighton’s foremost jazz piano teacher.

He composes regularly for his jazz projects and has written for TV, animated film and advertising.

Terry has a jazz trio with Spike Wells on drums and Paul Whitten on bass. They are currently featuring the music of the great pianist Bill Evans.

Other groups include Milestones (performing works by Miles Davis including the iconic 1959 album ‘Kind of Blue’) which had a UK tour 2010-11. Terry also plays organ (Hammond variety) and has his own organ trio. Terry performs with other bands including Magda Reising and the Blue Café.

As a solo pianist, Terry performs jazz and Latin repertoires for public and private bookings.

Terry also promotes jazz in and around Brighton at venues including The Brunswick Jazz Club in Hove and The Snowdrop in Lewes.

Terry’s career highlights include playing the Royal Festival Hall and Barbican Centre, as well as performing in Iraq, Romania, Morocco, Cyprus, Sicily and all over France (with Joe Lee Wilson). Terry has also performed with Archie Shepp and Chet Baker Harry Edison, Joe Newman, Sonny Stitt and Jimmy Witherspoon.
