REALBRIGHTON.com web review
In the past, putting entertainment and a restaurant
all under the same roof has often meant compromise. Then
Sue and Geoff Popper created the Joogleberry Playhouse.
Packed with enough imagination to put J K Rowling to shame,
the whole place oozes creativity... in the food, in the
entertainment and in the decor. The restaurant, upstairs,
is ideal for a long and lazy lunch, a quick bite, or a romantic
dinner. The design is like a working canvass, subtle changes
appearing every time you visit. At first glance, you would
be forgiven in just registering the clean, contemporary
design within a beautiful listed building.
On second glance, you might take in the artwork, or perhaps
notice the decorative mobiles or the hookah pipes all lined
up, or maybe you'll even notice some of the rather wacky
stage props, including a magicians cabinet. The twists are
subtle, something Brighton isn't generally known for. But
the food... mmm, the food! It's like taking a whirlwind
tour of the world with your mouth open. And again, that
imagination. From fresh Mediterranean to pan-Pacific, taking
care to pop over to the USA before heading off to Australia.
From light, dippy, gorgeous things to share, to a big selfish
plate all to yourself. Perfect whether you are on your own
or meeting friends. Excellent, even, for larger groups (we
had a ball at Christmas...).
Now to the downstairs. This is where Enid Blyton meets Moulin
Rouge. An intimate and awe inspiring cabaret bar, with small
round tables where you are served with your drinks and offered
a light supper before enjoying the show. This is also the only
place we know to sell Absinthe - guaranteed to send you on your
merry way. A range of entertainment preferences are catered
for, with the cream of local and even international talent dropping
by to impart melody, magic or laughter and sometimes all three
at once. Every evening, there is something different to try
(check out our listings below). Not forgetting the special themed
party that are occasionally thrown - often selling out - loud,
brash, bawdy, mixed, exciting - the thesaurus really doesn't
have enough adjectives to fully describe them. So you'll have
to book up early to sample one yourself.
Quality, creativity, imagination with friendly service.
If you think you know Brighton and haven't been here yet...
think again. Joogleberry Playhouse is an entire experience,
and one you really shouldn't miss.
