BRIGHTON ROCKS: Where’s the late night action?
“Joogleberry Playhouse opened
last summer and guarantees a fantastic night out. Upstairs
they serve delicious tapas, while the cosy cabaret bar has
entertainment every night.”

“One of the most welcome recent additions to Brighton,
Joogleberry Playhouse offers a unique combination of delicious
food and quality entertainment and relaxed vibe with accessible
results. It was opened last summer by sister and brother
team Sue and Geoff Popper, who wanted to create a relaxing
place for people of every age, with exceptional live performances
and quirky extras, including cheeky shots of absinthe.
“it’s a little more mature than a lot of places
in Brighton, but we have everyone enjoying themselves from
18 year olds to eightysomethings” explains
Sue. “And we appeal to all sexualities
and cultures”. Because they’re not straight-down-the-line
English themselves, as Sue puts it, the menu is a tapas
heavy melting pot of tasty ‘big food and little food’.
Former stage manager of ‘The Lion King’ and
‘Chicago’ Geoff is also responsible for the
superb décor downstairs – a streets-of-brighton
set with twinkly star backdrop – appropriate for somewhere
that has a cheery panto atmosphere thanks to a gregarious
clientele. And just because you’re unlikely to see
any chin stroking musos in the audience, it doesn’t
mean that the music, from jazz to salsa, is anything less
than the finest quality. Jazspel are just one example of
the talent worth catching; their Brand New Heavies jazz-gospel
sound returns to Joogleberry’s on May 8 and 9.
