Brighton Scene [16
- 22 Aug]
A weekly round-up of the best of Brighton
Professing a love of Jacques Brel (and named after one of
his songs), The Desperate Ones (Sun 20 Aug, Joogleberry
Playhouse) are a large ensemble incorporating flute, accordion,
violin, guitars, drums, trumpet and the dark sultry vocals
of Eliza Skelton. There’s also a little bit of acid-folk,
Nick Cave and Velvet Underground within their off-kilter
songs of love and death.
Ola Onabule [9 - 15
Aug]
Ola is a supreme and rare performer and his band regularly
features some of the finest musicians in the country. Reminiscent
of Marvin Gaye, James Brow, Stevie Wonder and George Benson,
Ola inspires with his immense vocal range, producing a sensational
sound of pure energy, grace and passion with a charming,
charismatic stage presence. Highly rated amongst soul aficionados,
he’s released five albums, full of mid-tempo funk
and soulful balladry.
