JOOGLEBERRY
AT BRIGHTON & HOVE BUSINESS AWARDS 2005
BEST VENUE for Client Entertaining Finalist!
[posted 3 Sept 05]
Joogleberry Playhouse was presented with
a certificate for being in the top 3 venues in Brighton
and Hove for client entertaining at a prestigious ceremony
at Brighton Racecourse on Thurs 1 Sept. Kristan Guru Murphy
who presented the awards praised the extremely high standard
of all 3 venues in the final shortlist.
What The Judges Said:“The
businesses in this category show the level of excellence venues
in Brighton and Hove are capable of offering. Leading the
way in cocktails, cuisines and entertainment, those short
listed provide a cross section, displaying and impeccable
service for the businesses of this city and beyond that need
to impress clients. These venues really give London a run
for its money in their style and delivery.”
What The Sponsor Said:
“These awards are brilliant, they
really are for the city’s best run businesses. Juice
107.2 is… extremely proud to be a sponsor of the Best
Venue for Client Entertainment” Matthew Bashford,
Managing Director, Juice FM.
What Joogleberry Says:
“We are so proud to be publicly
recognised as being such a great venue to come out to for
business AND pleasure! It’s fantastic to know that our
combination of good food, top entertainment and late bar is
being acknowledged and welcomed to this degree in such a prestigious
ceremony as the BAHBA’s, especially as our business
is still so young. We will work hard to maintain and improve
our service across the board through the coming year and look
forward to welcoming in regulars and new arrivals alike for
many great days and nights out at the Joogleberry!
Coming soon…. Our tasty Christmas menu and fabulous
programme of entertainment for the festive season…Email

TWO YEAR UPDATE
- NOW WE'RE WALKING!!!
[posted
25 june 2005]
After just two years, Joogleberry Playhouse is
well and truly established as a major player in Brightons
social scene. The city has welcomed us with open arms, over
and over again we have been told we are just what people have
been waiting for, the missing piece of the jigsaw for people
who have grown out of or never grew into clubs but still want
to enjoy a rich and creative social life with jazz flamenco
swing acoustic comedy and cabaret events in our beautiful
bar every night.
Our ground floor café bar restaurant
has continued to evolve throughout the two years, now with
a relaxed daytime menu and a choice in the evening of full
restaurant menu or a range of global tapas to snack on with
a drink. We have 3 sofa areas to relax in, and a wonderful
exhibition of entertainers including some of our very own
by talented artist Alex Donohoe. An accordion and other instruments
hang from the ceiling and the sky light creates a bright and
spacious feeling. With the huge number of chains and conglomerates
flooding Brighton, its one of the few independent places
around with a sense of individuality along with friendly service
whether you come for a coffee on your own or to celebrate
a special event in a big group.
Genuine heart & soul has gone in to
creating the Joogleberry experience and people appreciate
that we are continuing to grow and develop to reach our true
potential on every level. We are genuinely able to be so many
things to so many people: daytime coffee house, evening dinner
and drinks, a huge variety of high quality shows, and also
a buzzing late night bar as we are one of the few venues in
Brighton open every night til 1am. Joogleberry has grown to
become far more than our original vision with a life of its
own combining the character and creativity of everyone who
feels connected to it and contributes to its continuing success.

Molly Brown debuted at Joogleberry's at the end
of November to a packed and rapt audience. Playing 'their
own brand of good-time, feel-good music'
Blues, Swing, Jazz, Country
with energy, passion and
entertainment this band had the Joogleberry audience dancing
in the aisles and begging for more. Hailing from Warwick and
in Brighton for the first time we want Molly Brown back again
and again. Don't miss them next time!
PAUL MCCARTNEY
[posted 3 september 2004]
We were proud and happy that Sir Paul McCartney and Heather
Mills popped in for an evening’s entertainment recently.
The show was our very own Tony Lewis Band, back at Joogleberry
on November 5th. Tony as a fellow liverpudlian was pretty
chuffed to be playing to a guy who can only be described as
a living legend especially as Sir Paul commented on what a
great band it was when he left. Hopefully he’ll be a
regular down here as it’s easy to see there are no other
venues quite like us.

[review posted on 11 april 2004]
They loved us and we loved
them!
Kissmet debuted in Brighton at the Joogleberry
Playhouse on the 10th April and left an ecstatic audience
in no doubt that they will be back for more and some! By the
second song everyone was up and dancing, arms in the air,
entranced by the haunting vocals of Ron Singh and bro Buzz.
The music was a unique East/West fusion combining elements
of semi classical Indian raags, chants & Bhangra &
mixing them with Rock, Funk & Reggae. Hugely exciting!
Songs were in English, Punjabi & Hindi, often changing
tongues on the fly.
Kissmet wear their turbans with pride,
they've taken the best from the East and West & are generating
a safe platform for all to walk upon, regardless of creed,
colour or religion. Sitar, drums, tabla, guitar, vadja, keys,
English, Punjabi & Hindi, it's all Kissmet...
With Glastonbury on the horizon,
and sell out gigs all over the country expect to see Kissmet
back at Joogleberry very soon.

JOE LEE WILSON
@ JOOGLEBERRY
[posted 18 june 2004]
Advance notice of a very special show
coming to you on Friday 17 September - L.A.
born Joe Lee Wilson is in his late sixties and has used his
voice with the likes of Miles Davis, Archie Shepp, Sonny Rollins,
Freddie Hubbard and Cedar Walton to name a few.
To experience him
live is to be blessed with an exposure to a voice and style
considered to be the male equivalent to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah
Vaughan and Betty Carter. Dave Gelly from the Observer
describes him as “a mesmeric live performer. His
mixture of jazz, ballads, blues, gospel… is so personal
that his act is, literally, unique.”
Joe Lee Wilson was one of the innovators of New York’s
Jazz Loft movement and since then he has travelled the world
and played in most continents and major cities. This is his
first and only show in Brighton for the last two years and
we are honoured to have him playing here at Joogleberry’s.
JOOGLEBERRY'S
FIRST BIRTHDAY [posted
1 june 2004]
Our first Birthday
celebrations went off with a bang with a fantastic day and
evening of food, fine performance & festivity. Fake Bush,
MJ, our James and even Elvis popped in to entertain diners
in the restaurant while Viola Wills and Jazzspel wowed the
audience with a sublime show in the Cabaret Bar. Having fun
and raising money to save children’s lives at the same
time was a great experience and we are proud to have made
a significant contribution to Save the Children’s Sudan
Appeal through this event.
Its hard to believe we’ve been open a year – in
some ways so much has already happened it feels much longer
and at the same time it feels amazing to be just 12 months
old and know we are still growing and developing what we do.
THANK YOU to everyone who already knows and loves us and we
look forward to meeting all you who have not yet been ‘Joogled’
as soon as you can get here!

BOBBY DURHAM LIVE
[posted 15 may 2004]
We were proud and excited to welcome
Bobby Durham to our stage on Sunday 15th May as a very last
minute addition to our programme. The legendary
Philadelphian drummer is perhaps best known as a member of
Oscar Peterson's classic trio from the '50s and as one of
the great jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald's most sensitive accompanists.
Durham worked with Fitzgerald for a decade, and for an equal
length of time with Oscar Peterson, and with the big band
of Duke Ellington for five years.
He totally wowed the audience at Joogleberry’s, superbly
supported by musicians Terry Seabrook, Lawrence Jones and
Paul Whittan and the good news is he loves the venue and says
he’ll be back for more soon – keep your eyes peeled
– this man is a Legend.

PURIM PARTY
[posted 18
feb 2004]
Purim is a Jewish festival observed
on the 14th day of Adar that commemorates the Jewish people's
deliverance from Haman's plot to massacre them, as told in
the Book of Esther. The festival encourages people to dress
up in costumes, to eat lots of good food and pamper our bodies.
Also, we are obliged to imbibe alcohol until one doesn't know
the difference between "cursed is Haman" and "blessed
is Mordechai." In other words, we are to drink until
the point that we don't know good from bad. How fantastic
is that!
Our Purim Party will take place on Saturday
6th March (Purim Eve) and feature the popular Brighton Klezmer
band, the Matzos Boys with special jewish food and lots of
celebrating! Tickets on sale NOW!
