JOOGLEBERRY – IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE!
A big hello from Bill, Angi and Mike - the new Joogleberry team.
We're all terribly busy getting the Joogleberry ready for a tip-top Christmas and New Year - making improvements to the business and the building, ensuring we are the best venue in town for live music and comedy, plus a great restaurant and cafe which is open from 12noon everyday.
Looking into the future we will see the traditional Joogleberry nights complimented by a wide range of acts and the introduction of an eclectic club scene will guarantee there is something for everyone.
Expect to see little changes as we progress into the New Year - but rest assured the hard work and spirit which makes Joogleberry such a special venue will not be undone - we want to take Joogleberry further and make it THE Brighton venue of choice.
Sue and Geoff say thank you!
Joogleberry Playhouse changes hands as originators of the venue, sister and brother team Sue and Geoff Popper along with partner Perry Douglin, hand over the reigns to new owners Bill Smith and Angi Mariani.
A combination of factors has led to the decision to sell the business but we are proud to have created a venue that in Brighton, and the whole of the country, in fact even internationally, has gained such a great reputation for high quality entertainment, food and atmosphere all under one roof in the heart of Brighton.
Sue says “Though I’ll be very sad no longer to be at the helm, I’m very proud to have achieved so much in such a relatively short space of time. Winning the Brighton and Hove business award this year for being the best venue to entertain your clients is a fantastic accolade and sums up what I constantly hear back from our customers, performers and staff about how much they love the place and what we do. I’ll always be proud to have created it. We are confident that the new management will continue to refine and develop our wonderful venue for everyone to enjoy for many years to come.”
While Geoff continues his other business interests Sue will stay on at the Manchester Street venue in a consultancy role for a short time before adventuring anew.
And in the meantime the much enjoyed hand picked programme of entertainment and tasty tapas continues every night of the week, while coffee and cake are on hand for people popping by for tickets in the daytime.
For everybody who has visited, performed, helped, worked, talked about and enjoyed what we’ve done at Joogleberry over the last four years we want to say a huge thank you to YOU!
Your support has helped to create and shape the Joogleberry experience and it has been absolutely amazing to be a part of this and see it grow. We wish Bill and Angie all success and happiness with its continuance and everybody who receives this email a whole lot of Joogle Love along the way!
Sue & Geoff Popper
Many of you will have already been to see Liane Carroll at Joogleberry. She won the BBC Best Jazz Vocalist and Best of Jazz Awards in 2005 and is now up for BEST UK FEMALE JAZZ VOCALIST in the Ronnie Scott’ s Awards on May 7th. If, like me you think she deserves every accolade going, head over to the Ronnie Scotts website and register your vote for her. She just performed another stunning night with us and will hopefully be back before too long…
Coming up for the very first time: Our late night shows with LATE NIGHT RAW on festival Wednesdays and also a wonderful late nighter on Monday 14th featuring the fabulous LAURA VANE (singer with Gnarls Barclay on hit song Crazy) and very special guest NEWTON FAULKNER (hotly tipped for the top by just about everyone who made his Brighton debut at Joogleberry in January), hooray! This is going to be just sublime so forget about work worries and get tickets booked for this one on the double – they wont be around for long! Every other night of course we continue to have our free entry after show Late Night Bar for absinthe and atmosphere, and an absolute guaranteed good end to any night!

Joogleberry is delighted to have been awarded the BRIGHTON
AND HOVE BUSINESS AWARD for The Best Place to
Entertain your Clients 2006.
“Winning a BAHBA has been one of the highlights of our year. Since we opened as an independent venue in 2003 we have had wonderful feedback from all who visit and participate with us about our unique mix of entertainment, food, service and overall atmosphere. In a city so full to the brim of places to be entertained an accolade of the stature the BAHBA provides is high praise indeed and to win this award within the City is the icing on the cake for us or in our case, maybe more appropriately, the sugar cube in our absinthe! ” Sue Popper

JOOGLEBERRY
PLAYHOUSE IS 3!
[posted 3 jun 06]
Joogleberry’s 3rd birthday on Mon 5th
June is going to be a hot one as we open up both floors
for an evening of total Joogle pleasure and partying!
Hot shots, tasty canopies and live music from THE
REAL JOHN DOE PROJECT featuring the amazing
Remi Miles guarantee another great night.
From the day we opened the doors
in June
2003 the fantastic feedback and loyalty
from our customers has given us the boost to know we
are on the right path; there’s such a feeling
of connection among people for what we do and a desire
to support us as an independent local business with
its heart in the right place which is constantly evolving
and developing to be as good as we can possibly be.
The biggest and most exciting change
on the horizon is our new chef, Mr Leo Davis,
who’ll be launching a whole new menu from our
birthday onwards. Leo is an extremely experienced and
innovative all round chef and comes to us fresh from
a training stint at Yo Sushi so expect some Japanese
additions to our already popular global tapas style
menu and lots of fresh creativity besides. Mmmmm….
our food is going to another level – come and
try and see for yourself!
I’ve gotta blow the Joogle
trumpet here coz I do feel proud of what we’ve
done already … Three years can feel like a life
time with a young business that alternately whines then
dazzles like the temperamental toddler it is, but it’s
not long to have achieved the accolade of being listed
as one of the top five venues in Brighton by
Sunday Times or to be a finalist in the Best
Venue for Client Entertaining at Brighton and Hove Business
Awards 2005.
For celebrities passing through we’ve
had the full list from A to Z visiting for drinks, a
meal or entertainment along the way. One highlight of
the last year has to be Richard O’Brien
doing the Time Warp in the audience at our Halloween
show Little Shop Of Rocky Horror. And surely there is
no one more famous than Sir Paul McCartney
who came and spent an evening listening to the fabulous
TONY LEWIS BAND a regular Joogle favourite.
How proud are we of Nizlopi,
number one in the charts just before Christmas who played
at Joogleberry’s the second night we opened our
doors to the public. I remember too a young band with
a certain something about them taking to the Joogle
stage a couple of years ago now.. Their name? The
Kooks! Still, although the celeb stories are
exciting and I love to wonder who will be the next talented
performer from Joogleberry to hit the big time, what
really makes us who we are is the character and charisma
of all the performers, staff and regular customers,
and everyone who believes in the Joogle magic and wants
to perpetuate it forever. By being here you help to
create it and that’s why our birthday party is
for you. Hope to see you on the fifth or very soon and
very often! Don’t forget, IF YOU LOVE what we
do & want more of the same & better in the coming
year, spread the word about us & keep coming back!

Sun 1 Jan is Matt Goorney, blues man extraordinaire.
Matt takes the earthy power
of blues greats - Robert Johnson, Fred McDowell, Lightnin'
Hopkins and the like and makes it relevant today. Using
voice, guitar and slide, and harmonica he can conjure
up a whole band and breathe new life into the blues
idiom with a performance full of emotion and intensity.
Next up is Carly Bryant on the
8th Jan, a true one off original
Carly
is best known as the girl who boldly stands on the streets
of Brighton busking
who cant help but make people
stop and always seems to have a big crowd surrounding
her. Her music and lyrics are raw, energetic, gutsy
and poetic.
Matt English on the 15th is
another great blues based singer and guitarist. He's
followed up by Cathryn Stone on the 22nd Jan:
"Stone
possesses a voice of such rare quality that she has
a comfortable head start in the congested race for music
industry recognition. One to watch" Nick
Mee LATEST 7 And finally this month on the 29th
Jan, JERRY BEWLEY, a top troubadour and guitarist
heading in for Oxford to entertain us.
